Walking guides launched to help Trafford residents get out and about in the great outdoors

18 July 2016

The new resources highlight self-guided walks around a number of green spaces across the borough from Sale Water Park to Sinderland Brook.

The ten walking guides have been produced in partnership with City of Trees, Transport for Greater Manchester and Trafford Strategic Sport & Physical Activity Partnership, with the aim of encouraging local residents to get active and explore the green space on their doorstep.

Trafford is home to 30 municipal parks, and a diverse range of historic open spaces and visitor attractions. The borough has a rich history and heritage of parks and green space, and was at the forefront of the Victorian parks movement, which established the pattern of public green space we know today.

The guides outline over 35 miles of recreational routes taking in local gems such as Sale Water Park, Walkden Gardens, Carrington Moss, Dainewell Park, Worthington Park, Turn Moss and more.

Janie Burrage, Active Trafford Greenspace Officer comments “Across Trafford there is a wealth of parks, woodlands and countryside that’s just waiting to be explored. Whatever your age or fitness ability, walking is amazing for our health and wellbeing – every step uses around 200 muscles and walking just one mile can burn up to 100 calories!

She adds; “Walking offers a great way to discover these beautiful places which provide a perfect escape from the pressures of modern city life.”

In addition to the guides, The City of Trees team runs regular weekly walks across the borough including monthly bee spotting, evening bat walks as well as themed events.

Trafford Council’s Executive Member for Communities and Partnerships, Cllr John Lamb said:“In Trafford we have lots of green spaces and opportunities for people to enjoy. We all recognise that keeping active and taking regular exercise benefits our physical and emotional health and wellbeing.

“I welcome the introduction of these new walks, which I am confident will encourage even more people to step outside and enjoy the beautiful green spaces right on their doorstep.”
